#introduction post since I never did one:

Hi, I'm Terri!

I mostly post about #knitting with other maker stuff thrown in. Lately that's #sewing and #embroidery and #KidArt but I dabble in #electronics and #robots too.

I'm an #OpenSource developer and maintainer, mostly working with #Python or #infosec related stuff. (My PhD is in Web Security.) I coordinate #GSoC for Python every summer & mentor some folk directly.

I also do #nature and #dog #photography and talk about #parenting sometimes.

I suppose with the #twitastrophe ongoing, I should get around pinning an #introduction.

I'm Eric Korpela, an astrophysicist by training. My expertise is in interstellar matter (#ISM), UV instrumentation, radio instrumentation, and #SETI. I used to direct a small volunteer computing project called SETI@home (#setiathome). I'm semi-retired, and theoretically working 17 hours a week. In practice that turns into almost as many hours as I was working before I retired.

My posts here will often be unrelated to my work. I find it hard to be chatty about things that have exhausted me during the day. My short term life goal is to learn all that is knowable.

Float away in Alaska #photography

A photo I took with a digital camera in southeastern Alaska. You see a field of chiaroscuro cirrocumulus clouds taking up the top two-thirds of the image. Underneath are distant moutains in bluish haze blending into a nearly mirror surface of water that comes all the way to the front on the image where soft ripples echo.

This is a color photo I took in Alaska. Several sea lions are lounging on a small iceberg that is flat like a floating platform. The water around them is deep green and the berg is a pale blue in contrast. In the background are other small bergs and the shoreline with evergreens and snow.

I had a great day in the mountains yesterday! Leaving the trailhead at dawn, I was able to spend the entire day enjoying the snowy wilderness all the way to the summit and back. Great snow/trail conditions above a certain elevation allowing #snowshoeing between there and the summit. A clear sunny day with great views from the top. Just got back from my first #backpacking trip of the year and it did not disappoint! Set up base camp partway up a mountain next to a #stream, then summited the mountain the next day. Returned to camp for the night before heading back home. With the rainy conditions, people stayed away-- I didn't encounter a single person in two of the three days-- had the summit to myself!
