@lminiero Great post! Lots of useful information. FWIW I use MuseScore and I'm pretty satisfied with its audio rendering. Meets my needs.
@davenicolette thanks, I'm glad you liked it! Do you use MuseScore 3 or 4? MS3 had a slightly better quality soundfont than the default too, as a potential alternative

@lminiero I'm using 4. When 4 first came out, I didn't like the sound rendering and continued to use 3 for some time. It seems okay now.
